Artist Statement:
My current work is influenced by shapes, surfaces, textures and spatial relationships in the urban/suburban environment. Also important is a series of perceived opposites - abstraction and representation, the surface and what lies beneath, presence and absence, the actual and the implied. Another influence on my work is an interest in the aesthetics of ordinary/everyday objects or settings. Finally, I am interested too in what Paul Cezanne referred to as the 'uncertainties of visual perception'.
About 10 years ago I began collecting found and recycled objects. Initially, these objects were used as reference material for paintings, but I soon began assembling them as artworks in their own rights. These sculptural assemblages have so far been presented in the same manner as paintings - they are designed to be hung on a wall. Shapes, textures and spatial relationships within the assemblages have influenced my paintings, just as those in the paintings have influenced the more sculptural artworks. This practice reflects my long-held interest in the crossover between painting and sculpture. ...

Robert is a Brisbane-based Australian artist. He produces contemporary paintings and sculptural assemblages in an abstract style. He uses oils, or acrylics, or acrylics and mixed media, including found and/or recycled objects.
Robert also works as a workshop facilitator, tutor and occasional artist-in-residence.
