Biggest Artistic Inspiration ROBERTA'S STATEMENT

"Beauty is a key to the mystery and a call to transcendence. It is an invitation to savor life and to dream of the future." - Pope John Paul II letter to artists.

Painting is more than just slavishly copying. The real key is to observe nature and record her mystery, and if you do this, you create timeless, exclusive creations.

It is the ability to draw what you see that is the first and crucial step to painting what you feel. Each painting provides an entrance into a world of color, form and light. An artist is not just a good draftsman although this is of importance. He take the next step and ventures into a deeper reality. This reality usually leads to a great humbling of the spirit. It is with humility and wonder that I reflect on this created world and aim to achieve in paint what I am seeing with eye and heart.

I achieve this through a process that today is not acclaimed by most art schools and that I learned through a five-year scholarship program at the R.H. Ives Gammell studio, which was created in 1986 to provide a classical artistic education of the kind of training that Mr. Gammell gave to students in his lifetime. The legacy of Mr. Gammell and his tradition can be traced back to the great painter Rubens, and carries on through the Boston tradition of classical realist painting. Endangered by modern art, it has held to its value of drawing as a discipline and valued study as a means to achieve a glimpse into the mystery and awe of life. Without this training, the resulting painting has been said to be similar to screaming instead of singing, savage instead of civilized.
