“Concerning The Spiritual In Art”
(Excerpts from Kandinsky’s book)“
“... art forms that are purely external, have no future. Art forms that are internal, contain the seed of the future within itself... the soul is emerging, purged by trials and sufferings. Art is really art when it fulfills its purpose and feed the spirit.”
“The spectator feels a corresponding thrill in himself. Such harmony or even contrast of emotion cannot be superficial or worthless; indeed the “Stimmung” of a picture can deepen and purify that of the spectator. Such works of art at least preserve the soul from coarseness; they “key it up,” so to speak, to a certain height, as tuning the strings of a musical instrument.”
“The spiritual life, to which art belongs and of which she is the mightiest elements, is a complicated but definite and easily definable movement forwards and upwards. The movement is the movement of experience. It may take on different forms, but it holds at bottom to the same inner thought and purpose.”

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
It was in his adolescence that Roger found a niche of light in an otherwise dark world. A natural bent for expressing himself in art would detach himself from that surrounding. It was those who had faith in his inherent goodness and talent that thrust him into the creative world of artistic expression. He thanks all those who still have those simple drawings, paintings and sculptures stuffed away in the archives of their lives. |

| Your Personal Biography |
Roger Erby: His passion is his art, tapping into his internal nature for insight and expression.
The book written by Wassily Kandinsky, “Concerning The Spiritual In Art” has given Roger the foundational path to express his innermost feelings and thoughts. They exist within his internal landscape; the spirituality of emotions defined by shape, color, movement and rhythm. He connects with this philosophy and made it his life goal as an artist to seek and represent that truth.
Roger Erby was born in Waukeshau, Wisconsin. He spent most of his youth in rural Illinois and Iowa. The coaxing of his instructors and peers motivated him to pursue art as a career. Under a full scholarship, he developed his talents and love of the arts. After graduating from Iowa State University in art and design, he succeeded in building a career as an accomplished designer in Arizona.
A series of events in 2008 has awakened and reconnected this artist to his true calling. His mind and soul, liberated from genetic and environmental factors, now presents this second chapter of his life with powerful statements on canvas and in sculpture.
He considers himself an emerging artist in the medium of sculpting and mixed-media painting. |
