Artist Statement for Ronak Kordestani

My paintings bridge the gap between representational images and abstraction. Although recognizable objects are often depicted such as human figures, footprints, trees and a crescent moon, they are blurred, distorted, and then delicately layered on a shadowy background creating a mysterious, dreamlike atmosphere. Otherworldly landscapes and images of unidentifiable people float peacefully in an ambiguous space that comes from the deepest part of the unconscious mind. The dreamlike environment depicted is not a specific geographic location but an imaginary site reached only by a mental journey from our personal surroundings. Evoked by this abstract landscape are feelings of nostalgia and memories of a distant time and place existing only in the imagination, and yet strangely familiar.
Human migration and stories of displacement are themes that inform my most recent paintings. These images symbolically depict global movement by land and sea. Shadowy forms in the paintings are represented in a constant state of flux, driven by unknown forces and a longing for change. As my personal history is one of movement from home and change in environment, the paintings are also autobiographical. The abstract landscapes and floating maps represent the unknown environment at the end of the voyage. They also evoke feelings of nostalgia and a longing for home experienced by many uprooted souls.
