Artist Statement:
I have painted in oils and acrylics for over 30 years. I have always painted scenes which hit me and demanded to be painted. Mostly I paint natural landscape. I don't try to improve on nature, and try to reflect the scene as I saw it. I particularly like the effects of light and shadow and of contrasting cool and warm color.
My landscape works are from the Potomac River between Alexandria and Great Falls VA.' The Blue Ridge mountains, Maryland Eastern Shore, and some recent works from Martha's Vineyard.
My most recent works are townscapes, which are exhibited and sold in galleries in Gettysburg PA, Easton MD, Leesburg MD, and Alexandria VA.
There's an endless stream of beautiful scenes to paint, which change with time of day and with season. I try to capture the mood of the place, and to make pictures that people can recognise as places they have seen or visited, but seen in a more poetic light....

Alexandria, VA (July 7, 2002) - Gallery West, the member-operated fine art gallery at 205 South Union Street in Old Town Alexandria, announced today "Virginia Waters," a solo show of oil and acrylic landscape paintings on canvas by Richard Whiteley, whose work draws inspiration from the beauty of the Potomac River, the C&O Canal and the lakes, marshes and creeks of Virginia.
"Nature blesses us with an infinite variety of moods and contrasts, changing with the seasons, the weather and time of day, from dawn to dusk," says Whiteley. "I strive to capture the contrasts of light and dark, warm and cool in an impressionistic style and to create images that viewers can recognize, but presented in a more poetic light."
Largely self-taught for more than 30 years, Richard Whiteley began painting as he traveled around the world during his career in international chemicals marketing. While working in Europe, he studied with Leopold Geysen in Brussels from 1992 to 1996. Now retired, he continues to develop his skills at the Art League School in Alexandria, where he has studied with Mike Francis, Diane Tessler, Ed Cooper and Ross Merrill.
Whiteley is a member of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters and a member of Gallery West. Other gallery affiliations include Paul McGehee's Old Town Gallery in Alexandria and the Butler Gunning Gallery in Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, MA. In addition to regular appearances in Gallery West's monthly shows, in the National Capital Area Whiteley's work has appeared repeatedly in competitive exhibitions at the Art League, as well the Wilson Gallery and the Capitol Hill Art League.
Gallery West is located two blocks south of the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Regular gallery hours are Thursday – Sunday, 11 am – 6 pm, except Second Thursdays until 9. The public is also invited to visit the gallery's Web site at www.gallery-west.com.
