| Why Did You Become An Artist |
I was a shy child who was drawing all the time.
As a French teenager, I had two main interests: Art and Fashion. I knew more about the latter than the former, and as circumstances prevented me from attending Art school growing up, I became a designer before becoming a painter.
Design is one element of my Art, but the main thing in Art is something harder to describe than form, design, and colour.
Evocation is more important than showing.
When I see something that moves me, making a painting is a way to capture -and hopefully- share it. |

| Your Personal Biography |
BACKGROUND
I studied Design at the Paris Ecole Jeoffrin-Byrs International, and Illustration at the Paris Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs.
After a short career in design, then illustration, I was longing to return to something more deeply meaningful to me, and follow my personal inspiration.
During my last year at 'Arts Déco', I had started to create images outside the curriculum, and an opportunity arose to be published by Paris Art Publisher Flammarion. This was the first of a series of commissions by Print, Poster and Card publishers (Flammarion in France, Artistsworks in the USA, Poster Editions and Habit Press in Australia) These works on paper were featured at Art Expo New-York every year between 1985 and 1990, and at the Toyama Museum's of Modern Art first Poster Triennale.
When two of my publishers disappeared during the 90's recession, I taught myself to paint with oils and started to exhibit in Australia and France.
I had worked and lived in Paris, Tunesia and Los Angeles, before settling in Sydney in 1986. Inspirations were sea and cityscapes, and later, a return to a childhood obsession to draw people. After a couple of spontaneous portrait commissions, I started hunting second-hand bookshops for books on portraiture, and taught myself more about it.
In 1996 & 97 I studied 'old masters' painting techniques at the Charlie Sheard Studio School in Sydney.
I also furthered my printmaking experience at the Waringah printmaking studio, and Waverley Woollahra Art School.
I occasionally teach portrait classes/worshops at the Waverley-Woollahra (Bondi Road) Art school.
I have been a finalist for the Mosman Art Prize, the Waverley Art Prize (first Prize), Shirley Hannan Portrait Prize, Salon des Refusés, Blake Prize, Toyama Poster Triennale,
Portia Geach Memorial Award (six times.) My 2001 entry is in The National Portrait Gallery of Australia.
My work has been featured in TV programs ( FR3 France, ABC TV) as well as printed media.
Reviews include The Sydney Morning Herald, Australian Financial Review, Australian Art Collector, Brisbane Courrier Mail, and various French publications, National Portrait Gallery website.
I have written a story on Matisse and Byzance for issue 1 of East-West Arts Magazine. |
