Artist Statement:
In general, my work is about applying traditional techniques to unconventional materials. My recent pieces explore the relationship between domestic activities and stress using caution tape, danger tape, and flagging tape.
The feminist movement in the early 1990s started a trend for women to be the opposite of a 1950s housewife. Women wanted more than just the opportunity to vote and get jobs; they wanted power. Many feminists stopped doing things that were considered to be a stereotype of women, like shaving, wearing makeup, and wearing dresses. They announced that having a husband and children was not as important as climbing all the way up the corporate ladder; that the instinct to nurture a family might actually be forced upon them by society. Domesticated housewives became an entertainment persona and the butt of many jokes.
Recently many women have realized that they cannot shut out their compulsions to be domestic. At times of high stress, they unconsciously become obsessed with cleaning and cooking. Those that are more right brained rely on craft projects like sewing and knitting. These activities calm them down by giving a distraction from the issues in their lives....
