Artist Statement:
My art is inspired by our biological world. I often focus on nature’s fragile beauty and the tension between concepts such as hope through nurturing and creation, and fear through neglect and destruction. In weaving together these elements, I portray subjects with vital intensity and desperate vulnerability.
Recently my focus has turned to our cultural ambivalence toward nature. By subverting image styles found in science and popular culture I am giving visual form to the misuse of nature as a commodity and drawing attention to the effects society is having on the smallest components of ecosystems.

| Your Personal Biography |
My relationship to art developed out of a love of drawing from cartoons as a child. This activity coupled with an introduction to textiles by a high school art teacher lead me to study at Kutztown University in my home state of Pennsylvania. After several semesters of school I found myself unsure of what a future in art could offer. At the invitation of a friend I came to North Carolina to work while I contemplated what path my life would take next. I enlistment in an Americorp program with the City of Wilmington and through the experience I discovered the value of grass roots community organization and action. During this time, I lived at Wrightsville Beach and discovered an overpowering connection with the natural environment.
These ties to place and a chance meeting with my future husband caused me to make North Carolina my permanent home. I returned to art renewed in purpose at East Carolina University where I received a BFA in Painting with honors in 2002. While there, I participated in the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources Environmental Education certification program and was awarded an internship through the NC Youth Advocacy Commission to work at Carolina Beach State Park. I used these experiences to develop an understanding of ecology and our role as humans within its framework.
An internship at Emerge, a student run, community-based gallery affiliated with ECU led me to take a position with Fountainside Gallery upon graduation. The situation developed into a management position that was an invaluable education in itself, but left little time to develop further in my art practice. Encouraged by receiving the NC Arts Council Regional Emerging Artist Grant in 2004, I returned to ECU in 2005 to work toward an MFA in Painting. The experience has given me the opportunity to further develop conceptual and technical skills. Through studio practice and conceptual thought, I work toward giving visual form to current ecological issues.
