Artist Statement:
The work displayed are selections from my various portfolios, and illustrate my unique style of self-portraiture and straight photography, as well as showcase my work with alternative processes, mixed media, and large-scale photomontage. My combined use of these processes brings to my work a painterly feeling not usually associated with photography....

| Your Personal Biography |
Stephen Sheffield is a native of the Boston area and has a studio located in the historic Leather District in downtown Boston. He is an alumnus of Cornell University, where he obtained a BFA in painting with a minor in photography, and he received his MFA in photography from California College of Arts & Crafts, in Oakland.
The work displayed here illustrates Stephen's unique style of self-portraiture, as well as his painterly approach to book-making, alternative processes and photography. Much of his work expresses a sense of timelessness combined with the ŇlookÓ of classic film noir. Stephen destroys and rebuilds each book, recycles the discarded, reacting intuitively to create something new. The books are intended to be displayed on a wall or on a pedestal or shelf, or even amongst other books in a library to be discovered.
Stephen has exhibited nationally for many years and has a number of large-scale commissions in Boston and New York City; his work has been featured in various national publications. He is represented in Boston by the Panopticon Gallery, and he runs the fine art silver photography department at the New England School of Photography in Boston.
