Artist Statement:
For me, pyrography is not so much about lines as it is about shapes and tones. Each shape that I burn, with it's own range of tones and textures, evolves into a piece of artwork unto itself. These shapes eventually become a jumbled jigsaw puzzle of light and shadow... and I run on the faith that the chaos in front of me will somehow flow together to resemble the image I have in my head.

Artist Reviews:
"...Tom Vogler’s choice of media is “pyography,” he burns his art into wood. It is a very detailed and painstaking process. This year he has added color by discovering how to burn pigment into the wood." -- from http://www.theandrewsjournal.co m/articles/2009/11/11/opinions/ doc4afb234e3d23b543841510.txt

Tom Vogler is a self-taught artist who was born in East Liverpool, Ohio. He was raised in Ohio and Pennsylvania during the era of the steel-mills closing and witnessed the despair, sadness, and hopelessness of so many people. These early recollections have served as the focus of much of his artwork.
Tom received an Associate of Arts degree from Kent State University in 1993 and a Bachelor of Arts degree seven months later. In 1996, he received a Master of Science in Education degree from Youngstown State University. His major concentration was psychology, which perhaps has contributed to his current artwork focusing on people as his primary subject matter. Tom moved to Andrews, NC in 2002 with his wife and their two youngest children.
Following a traumatic accident in 1999, Tom began drawing and painting as a way to express himself while undergoing extensive physical and speech therapies. His work began in frustration and evolved into a passion. His early works were in a variety of mediums including charcoal, watercolors, oils, pastels, and acrylics. Many of these early works adorn the walls of medical offices, private homes and playhouse theaters.
