Artist Statement:
About the paintings of Simon Blackwood
The property of beauty is to shine.
Its' light extends infinitely both inwardly and outwardly.
It is both overwhelming and inspiring and whatever it
illuminates is consumed as it is also created by it.
In short, beauty is not partial.
I have chosen to follow a spiritual orientation toward all things I do.
The road and the destination in this journey is the love of beauty.
(A statement inspired by the writings of Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi and Jelaleddin Rumi.)
Painting is a metamorphosis from base elements into an image of another reality beyond those original elements. It can allude to sublime ideals through subject matter or by the means of the juxtaposition of colour, shape and form. At best it reveals the highest aspirations of man striving to praise the gift of intelligence, love of beauty and life itself.
Paintings can recall or remind us by illusory means; they may also point towards something beyond the material object of the ‘tableau’ hanging on a wall.
The paintings represented here also attempt, without abstraction, to point beyond the subject matter, alluding to the hidden, in the world of man, that gives rise to his creativity. ...

Simon Anthony James Blackwood, born 1948
* 1965/67 Colchester School of Art
* 1967/70 Coventry School of Art
* 1970/71 worked in London as assistant to Mike Sandle (sculptor) and Barbara Reis (Art historian) on her book on WM Turner.

* There met Gerald Wilde (Bloomsbury set) cared for him for a number of years and was in touch with him until his death in 1986

* 1972/80 Founder member of the Beshara Design Centre, The Industrial Buildings Preservation Trust and Rotherhythe Workshops Ltd., in London. Raised funds and organised the conversion of a group of Docklands Warehouses for the purpose of artists and designers studios and as a centre for Dance and the Performing Arts. In 1976 The Riverside Dance Centre opened there with the first performance of Leonnide Massines' ballet 'The Song of the Reed' based on the opening Stanza of Jelaleddin Rumi's Mathnawi.

* 1976 Studied at the Beshara School of Intensive Esoteric Education in Gloucestershire.
* 1976/78 Worked at the BSIEE and travelled extensively in Europe and the near east.
* 1979/80 Attended the 2nd course at the Beshara School in Scotland. Afterwards ran a successful restaurant in Oxford.
* 1981 Moved to the Scottish Borders to set up a studio/gallery and a picture conservation business.
* 1988 - 98 Establishes a new studio overlooking the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Turkey.
* 1989 Commissioned to live in Provence to work on a series of seven paintings for the interior of the recently restored Chateau du Tourreau, Vaucluse.
* 2008 Built Eco-studio in the Scottish Borders.
