Artist Statement:
I am a Deputy Sheriff by profession and have been a Law Enforcement Officer since 1995. The art of Scrimshaw has always intrigued me. I was first introduced to it firsthand several years ago at a museum in Charleston, S.C. There were several pieces of Scrimshaw on display that were created by Sailors in the 1800’s. These pieces were simple but beautiful in their own way. I think what made them so beautiful is the fact that they were created by everyday, ordinary men who in their spare time created these works of art. As I looked at these pieces I began to ponder about these “ordinary men”, about their lives, about their hardships. This made me think to myself “What am I going to leave behind? How will people remember me?” These ordinary men who created these works of art left a little something of themselves in each piece and I wanted to do the same! I wanted to create something that would be around long after I am gone.
In January of 2006 I began learning the art, I read everything that I could find on the subject. Finally through trial and error found my style...
