STATEMENT
In broad terms, I photograph and write to discover and understand what I think. BIOGRAPHY
I am Stephen Spiller, and I live in New York, NY. For many years I’ve been photographing people on city streets in, for example, Paris, Venice, Florence, New York, Los Angeles, and many other locations. Photography, for me, is an invaluable tool I use to better understand the meaning and significance of “individual identity” as a concept.
By photographing non-verbal clues, like clothing, tattoos, idiosyncratic behavior, and more, I believe I’m capturing meaningful information, encrypted perhaps but still important “messages” about identity that are constantly being received and conveyed. A “Freudian slip”, I think, may be a telling remark, but no more so than what can be learned predicated on how we dress, decorate our bodies, etc. In both situations understanding and/or interpretation is required.
I’m attracted to the idea that individuals might thoughtfully view my images and recognize aspects of themselves in others, acknowledge feelings as a common-denominator language and, most importantly, value their unconscious. Understanding “identity”, I believe, is crucial to individual well-being. Moreover, understanding who we are as individuals in large measure determines how we behave collectively as a society.
Since 2004, my work has been exhibited in galleries in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and other metropolitan locations, and in a variety of non-traditional, and traditional, venues, including Art Basel, Miami Beach. I have also been recognized in numerous international competitions, with my work being accepted for publication most recently in: Photographer’s Forum, Best of Photography 2011 and International Photography Awards Competition Book 2011. I work without technical concerns, e.g. about color, tone, image dimensions, etc. or even preconceived ideas about what the final image will, or should, look like. Occasionally I write text accompanying my images.
