Artist Statement:
Suzette as of late has been
working on collages without a
preconceived notion of the end
result. Allowing the imagery
to appear, drawing on the
subconscious element. This
method starts with collaging
hand painted papers and
building on the forms that
appear, and blocking out
others to create clarity. As
one collage is completed
another is brought about by
the discoveries made in the
last. This method has allowed
for spontaneity of imagery and
many surprises in Suzette’s
work.

Body Works - Our bodies are a
function of our mind. My
painted figures manifest the
impact that events in our
everyday life have upon men
and women: how we bend,
stretch, and struggle to
balance the issues we deal
with. By using the painted
human form in combination with
other symbolic elements such
as ladders, doors and swings I
am trying to project more
elemental issues. These added
elements allude to social,
political and economic values
and of alternative paths. My
goal is to pursue universal
notions that I believe are
important to communicate and
share with others....

Why Did You Become An Artist It was only natural!

Your Personal Biography Suzette Terry is an artist who has been extremely active in the South Central Ontario art scene since graduating from the University of Guelph in 1990 with an Honors Degree in Fine Art and Business.

Having spent her early years in the historically picturesque town of Fergus, she is currently a resident of Port Stanley on the north shore of Lake Erie and works from her studio there.

You will undoubtedly be impressed with Suzette’s scope of expression. Not only does her subject matter range from figurative to vibrant abstract pursuits, her mediums follow suit, ranging from paintings in both oil and acrylic, to printmaking and animated mixed media collages. It is this shifting of gears from one medium to the next that spurs Suzette to new and innovative discoveries in both technique and content.

With bold form, her powerful paintings are rich in stunning hues and the viewer will be aware of how she has built on her influences: the colours of the Fauves, the abstraction of Picasso, and the simplicity of Mattise.

Suzette as of late has been working on paintings without a preconceived notion of the end result. Allowing the imagery to appear, drawing on the subconscious element. This method starts with adding colour and form to a canvas in addition to direct drawing and blocking out until an image begins to develop. This method has allowed for spontaneity of imagery and many surprises in Suzette’s work.

At the close of 2007 Suzette has had 15 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous juried and group shows. Her work can be found in private and public collections in Canada, the United States, England, Australia, and China.
