Artist Statement:
Art has been my past, is my present and will be my future. I'm not someone that can just sit down and do nothing, I need to be painting! There is so much that is always going thru my mind, I only am able to record in sketches a small percentage, but that is plenty to keep me busy all the time and then some.
I'm available to do commissions so feel free to contact me if you have anything you might like painted. I'm currently working on a large (12'8" wide by 7'6" high) removable mural of a jungle scene. It is shown on my new website on the Work-in-progress page.
Thanks!
Steve...

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
Art has been part of my life since I was young. Always enjoyed sketching and worked with water colors, even tried acrylics at one time but now I really enjoy oils. Being an Artist is my purpose in life. |

| Your Personal Biography |
My work is Oils on Canvas an I began painting professionally on Maui in 1982. I would paint a couple paintings and give as gifts at christmas, then my wife at that time met a lady that was opening a gallery an looking for paintings. The first works that sold were three larger surrealistic ones which were purchased by a young man to give to his father. Galleries that handled my work were Hedy Walter Gallery, Lahaina, Maui, Stephen Sands Beach Front Studio, Lahaina, Maui and Princeville Galleries, Princeville, Kauai. I was also a member of the Lahaina Art Society and would sell my paintings under the Banyon Tree by the Old Courthouse. Most recently was Wall Decor Frame Shop & Gallery in Orange Beach, Alabama.
The work I enjoy the most is seascapes and wildlife. When I lived in Hawaii I did more old ships as there was a replica of one where we lived in Lahaina. I do a lot of detail work even to the point of 1000's of small brush strokes in order to attempt the look of fur on animals.
I am a self-taught artist, which maybe has taken me longer to get where I am an to get where I want to be, but I feel comfortable with that.
Born in the middle of Kansas, USA, it wasn't until I moved to Maui, Hawaii that I started painting professionally. Prior to then, I had sketched and drawn a lot and would even do a painting or two, to give as gifts. The land and especially the Ocean was what inspired me to take my art seriously. I originally had gone there to work as a bookkeeper for a shopping center, but the indoor life just wasn't for me. It didn't take but a few months to realize that.
In 1991 I returned to Kansas for personal reasons, and it was harder there, to get back the painting desire I had in Hawaii. In the beginning, I did try working parttime and painting the rest, but that didn't work well, so finally things evolved to the point that I was painting fulltime again. I've even started doing book illustrations for an author. The scenes are still paintings on canvas, but I just convert them into digital files for printing. I do commission paintings and try to get some paintings for sale on my website as time allows.
My Paintings are Oil on Stretched Canvas, measuring 3 inch by 3 inch, to a removeable, 3 panel Mural that was 144 inch by 90 inch. Personally, I like the larger paintings, I still might use a 00 brush in areas like on the Mural, but there is just something about them seems easier than the small ones. I have had to use a pair of jewelers glasses to see certains parts in the small paintings. |
