Artist Statement:
The celebration of life, the good days and the not so good. The insecurities and memories of growing up in foreign land form the main theme of my works. This collection titled “Colours of Africa”, brings out Africa in its varied hues and aspects.
Having spent 12 years plus of my life in Africa I have lived through many military regimes, fragile democratic rules and two coups. The fear of living through such a shaky atmosphere coupled with my own instabilities of adolescence is the common strand of my art.
After moving to India, I noticed similarities in heritage and culture between Africa and India. In this collection, the portraits are expressive of fear and insecurities of growing up and adulthood, (Children with fear in Understanding Me; insecurities of peer pressure Peer Pressure the warrior fearing what he will face that day What am I gonna face today?; the vegetable lady wondering about her future( What is this gonna get me).
