Artist Statement:
HAND CRAFTED MONOCHROME PRINTS
by SURENDRA

For over 25 years Surendra has
been exploring the art of
meditation, spending a good
deal of this time in India. He
feels that this has shaped his
work, helping him to look for
something essential in the
fleeting changes of the
surfaces we constantly
encounter. The other important
influence has been his
connection with Japan and his
love of simplicity in Japanese
art and craft. Primarily, he
wants only to convey the sense
of wonder, richness and beauty
in the mundane details that we
often overlook everyday .

A former associate of the
Royal Photographic Society,
Surendra has also taught
photography at junior high
school. He has exhibited his
work in Pune, India, Tokyo,
Japan and Exeter, UK.

He favours a short telephoto
lens and often works very
close to his subject. He likes
to take his time, often using
a medium and, occasionally, a
large format camera as well as
35mm. He prefers natural light
and rarely uses a flash, even
for indoor portraits or figure
studies. Usually he works
outdoors, focusing on details
of form and texture only
occasionally exploring broad
vistas.

He works only in black and
white, sometimes introducing
colour ...

Artist Reviews:
Sometimes the sublime can be
found even in the most mundane
aspects of life. Take, for
example, dead leaves on the
ground in a park in suburban
Machida, which British
photographer and local
resident Surendra has
transformed into sublime
images of visual poetry in his
upcoming exhibition 'Natural
Details'.

Why Did You Become An Artist not provided

Your Personal Biography I came to photography later on in life when in 1992, aged 49, I inherited some equipment from one of my uncles. Working in a boarding school at the time, the enthusiasm of a few senior pupils for the black and white darkroom fanned my passion and helped my confidence. I completed a training and it was not so long before I began teaching the subject. Portfolio submissions preceded some magazine work.
Moving to Japan in 1999 with my new Japanese partner provided fresh, exotic subject matter. It also steeped my approach in the aesthetics of that country. Understatement with drama, refinement with spontaneity and precision with dissolution are the contradictory terms that spring to mind. They lend unique counterpoint to Japanese arts and crafts.
My stay in Japan provided the soil for my first exhibition of 40 black and white prints, 'Natural Details', at the Tokyo Museum for Photography in 2001. Returning to England soon afterwards, I created two further exhibitions in Exeter at the Exeter Craft Guild 'Towards Abstraction' and Star Child Gallery 'Natural Nudes'.
From 2003 to 2007 I concentrated on building series of images: 'Dartmoor Streams', 'Bark', and 'Eroded Rocks'. More recently, I have been producing a range of lith prints, latterly based on a shoot in Japan in 2007 a slection from '500 buddhas'.
Moving next to the Dartmoor National Park at the end of 2008, I have daily access and a fresh look through the viewfinders at this wonderful small wilderness. Although I sometimes shoot the wider landscape, my images tend to be introspective moving more towards form, texture and abstraction. I remain committed to the magic of traditional darkroom processes and especially the beauty and uniqueness of the lith print.
