Artist Statement:
Late 1955 my eyes peeped in to this world. Since then, they have learned by capturing flashes from the masters, but the influence of Vincent Van Gogh and Ansel Adams work has forged my technique.
For the past 25 years I have chased “Water” throughout the world in its different states. Water gives life and is life, as photography is to me.
When I capture the images, all my senses are at work, enjoying every moment. To view the finished work, I replace sounds and aromas with Rock music and a glass of red wine.

The Life Aquatic
Each of Gonzalo Contreras del
Solar’s photographs is a variation
on a theme.
By Stephanie Xenos
Water is notoriously difficult
to photograph. The qualities
that make it appealing
as a subject—motion, translucence,
depth, reflection—also make it
challenging to capture on film. Couple
the technical challenges with the
physical challenges of climbing glaciers,
skirting waterfalls, and hiking
great distances, and you understand
what makes Aguas del Mundo en
Azul (waters of the world in blue)
special. The exhibit, mounted by Icebox
Quality Framing and Gallery,
features nearly thirty black-andwhite,
color, and solarized photographs
from Bolivian photographer
Gonzalo Contreras del Solar—and
each is a variation on a theme. “Gonzalo
has a basic statement,” says
Howard Christopherson, Icebox
owner, “but he finds many ways to
say it.”
Contreras del Solar has spent several
decades making that statement.
He’s photographed water in all its
states in more than twenty countries,
even climbing airy peaks to photograph
glaciers. Christopherson says
Contreras del Solar is equal parts explorer
and photographer and considers
his intrepid photographic pursuit
part of his appeal. Despite the
grandiosity of Contreras del Solar’s
efforts and his influences (Ansel
Adams and Vincent Van Gogh), his
photographs remain true to their
purpose and free of the pretense and
ego often seen in adventure photography.
Simple and elemental, they
convey the depth of our relationship
to water.
“My love for water and small details
comes from when I was small
and traveled to the Bolivian subtropic,
where you find many waterfalls,”
says Contreras del Solar. “I had a
particular interest in looking at water
droplets on trees, which I could
see through binoculars. I recall trying
to take a photograph using a Kodak
Brownie and the binoculars, but
the photograph came out blurred.”
Needless to say, Contreras del Solar
and his photographs have come a
long way.
