Artist Statement:
I have spent my entire life moving, from country to country, (Africa, Cyprus, Malta), and within the UK.
My work is primarily concerned with colours and how they relate across the oicture surface, how they create mood and an imaginary world. My themes always have their roots in something I've seen, or dreamed about, and anything that strikes an emotinal chord. Visual experiences often suggest potential 'colour notes' in my mind, which I can follow in any direction the emerging painting might require. My work falls into 3 main categories:
1. LANDSCAPES.
I paint watercolours in situ to explore the landscape's elements, searching for the essential components that, for me, recreate a sense of place and underlying forces. Sometimes I work directly from the memory of a journey, or a quick drawing, or purely from random marks and colours.
2. WOMEN IN THE TURKISH BATHS.
When I lived in Nicosia I went regularly to the old Turkish Baths and drew and painted women in the changing room and in the heated chambers, using snippets of conversation to inform the gestures and poses of the figures in my paintings. The Baths convey a constant state of flux, from the ...
