Artist Statement:
My work focuses on documenting the community of various urban cities, using autobiographical imagery as a metaphor for memory of my investigations. I use glass and ceramics as my primary mediums, which are used as a canvas for imagery. In my B.F.A. Thesis Exhibition, Inner Conservation, I used autobiographical imagery to record the Cleveland’s inner city, capturing the memory and history of dilapidated locations before they became a lost legacy. Seven photo books were published online in an effort to revive the history of these specific abandoned warehouses located in Cleveland, OH. Inner Conservation was created using found bricks, self-published photo books, sand cast glass replicas with metal inclusions, and concrete. The found bricks were borrowed from seven specific locations which were the main characters of the installation. The entire process prior to building the 8’ structure was documented, including the community that helped to make it happen. The series of books were placed inside the installation for the audience to view. When the installation was over, ten artists were brought in to graffiti and destroy the building and its surroundings.
