Artist Statement for Ian Laws
|
|
|
My Art comes from my experiences with living with O.C.D and Anxiety disorder.
I use the Canvas and my work to bring forward what lies within myself and i am hoping that an inclusiveness rather than the exclusiveness that currently exists in society's strict defintion and parameter of "Normality"is something that i can address even as a small voice with my work.
It is a sincere hope that i will be able to give this voice and help myself and my way of feeling about myself as well as doing the same for so many others who are shuffled and lost within the medical system and left on the boundaries and fringes of this life where they are unseen and therefore easier to forget about by the mainstream.
Art has been a saving grace personally as it has given me an outlet for all of these things that i once internalised much to the detriment of not only myself but also in the name of being truth and dealing with things no matter how difficult or painful they are.
Much of my work is off balance, off kilter,as i am within myself due to medication's effects and dealing with my problems/blessings.
I am as positive as i can be with my work and my life,
after opening this statement with perhaps not the most optimistic words as life is not always that way.
I have to also adress the fact that mush of life is great and as much as it is difficult, frightening, sad etc it is also very much worth the ride.
I have many things to be thankful for in my life,my beautiful wife Melissa and loving family and friends.
I was invited recently to Exhibit at the Florence Biennale at the Fortessa Da Basso in Florence Italy in December this year for the second time and was asked to send work for consideration to the Lessedra Fine Print 5th Annual Show which is a great honor.
Take Care all,
Ian.
