Artist Statement:
My goal in painting is to
create images that are
humourous and/or interesting
or else beautiful and a
pleasure to behold. I like to
tell stories with my cartoon
images. You can see more art
on my website www.maxey.co.nz

I think that there is high
value in art that clearly
communicates something useful
to the viewer and that, if it
is necessary to read an
explanation of an artwork in
order to understand it, then
it has largely failed.

I have always been very
interested and involved in
art. My parents are both
artistic and musical, and this
inspired me to paint and draw
from a very early age. Even
while at university studying
geography, I spent much of my
spare time drawing, and
deriving supplementary income
from artistic endeavours. I
have a very wide range of
experiences and knowledge to
draw from, and want to
incorporate these into my art
to produce work that interests
and excites both the audience
and myself.

My goals are to secure
exhibitions in public
Galleries, and to exhibit
outside New Zealand. Late in
2008, I travel to the Grand
Canyon to kayak the Colorado
River and to take photographs

Why Did You Become An Artist I became interested and active in art from a very early age. I loved drawing imaginary scenes, maps, buildings, vehicles and inventions. After professional training in other fields, I returned to a career in art, starting as an illustrator and designer, then shifting the emphasis to fine art. This was really the only field within which I could truly exercise my creativity.

My painted works are rendered in acrylic on stretched canvas. I paint well-known scenes of New Zealand in a cubist style, as well as a range of humorous predicaments and situations in a bold cartoon style. I find painting both these styles at once interesting and inspiring - each style is a creative 'springboard' for the other.

I paint in rich, intense colours using strong light/dark contrast. I paint my cubist scenes in as few blocks as possible but while still clearly representing the well-known subject scene. Some of these works look surprisingly 3 dimensional. The subject matter in the humorous paintings consists of people and/or imaginary creatures in unprescribed unusual, funny situations. My aim in painting these is both to surprise and amuse myself and also to present an audience with an attractive work with a humorous bite. Hopefully, if the joke wears off, the aesthetic qualities will not.

I also produce limited edition prints for which I assemble the images on computer from hand drawn components, starting with an ink drawing. These have proved very popular.

I have always been very interested and involved in art. My parents are both artistic and musical, and this inspired me to paint and draw from a very early age. Even while at university studying geography, I spent much of my spare time drawing, and deriving supplementary income from artistic endeavours. I have a very wide range of experiences and knowledge to draw from, and want to incorporate these into my art to produce work that interests and excites both the audience and myself.

I work as a full time artist at Toi Poneke, The Wellington Art centre.

My goals are to secure exhibitions in public Galleries, to exhibit outside New Zealand. I intend to develop my cubist style further and generally to raise the profile of my work.
