Artist Statement:
I use oil paint on wood panels to create works of art that comment on the amount of television advertising that I intake on a daily basis. The transparent and translucent qualities of oil paint allow me to layer several advertisements onto one picture plane. My paintings take on three formats; the three formats are derived from my two television sets. The three formats are referred to as the DVR Paintings, the Infomercial Paintings and the Versus Paintings.
For the DVR Paintings, I use a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) to capture every television program that I regularly watch. I then capture one image from each commercial and layer them together to form a completed painting. I use translucent and opaque layers of paint to conceal and reveal interesting juxtapositions. The end result is a series of paintings that represent the fusion of the advertisements within the specific television programs that I watch. Each painting becomes a chronologically ordered and obtrusive amalgamation of commercial advertising.
The Infomercial Paintings are predominantly textual. I chose several time periods when I would normally be asleep with the television on. For a designated amount of time, I flip through the infomercials and write down the ...
