Artist Statement:
My abstract art is the process of emptying and meditating. The art itself is the process of self-transformation. Akin to shedding skin, letting go of the surface layers that get in to way of seeing. It's a process of renewal. Moving forward and leaving the old skins, the old self behind. Visual art and writing have long been my means of release, letting go and gaining perspective. Four years ago, I was reading my journal and realized that my best writing was there, hidden away. Raw, real and unedited. Words, ideas and images that had to 'get out' written in every direction, squashed onto the pages, creating shades and shadows. So that's when I saw it. I decided to get a large masonite board and write, unedited. I began writing small, stream-of consciousness to see what came of it. I woke up and wrote, and wrote, and wrote... continuously in different colors. Small, so it remained unedited. From there I continued with similar pieces; words of both self-exploration and excavation. As the style evolved, I began portraits with the words of others. Words that have inspired me, shaped me or that convey a particular message...

| Your Personal Biography |
Artist, activist, athlete, Vanessa Chakour embodies dedication to mind, body and spirit in her daily life, as well as in her life’s work. Vanessa’s art combines influences from her musical background, her love of words and her deep sense of connection to the discovery of “self.” She has created album covers, portraits of artists, evocative “innerscapes” as well as many other works of art. Her unique style of ‘Visual Verse’ was born out of need for unedited release and self-expression. Her personal work reaches deep within through stream-of-consciousness writing and images to empty her mind, reveal and uncover innate truth beneath the surface. Vanessa’s activism has emerged as a response to the understanding of the connectedness between people and the urgent need to work diligently for positive social change. As a former professional boxer, Vanessa showed her strength as a world-class athlete and uses the same energy and determination to mobilize people and resources towards creative solutions to problems. As an artist, Vanessa realizes the power of the arts to shape social change and awareness. She has coordinated concerts/events and created programs to raise awareness/funds for various causes. These include HOPE, with His Holiness The Dalai Lama which she coordinated to raise funds and awareness for the preservation of Tibetan arts and culture through The Norbulingka Institute. She has recently been acting Director and consultant for 'The Stop the Violence Movement' recently revitalized by Hip Hop activist/philosopher, KRS-ONE. She is an Athlete ambassador with 'Right To Play,' a global organization of that uses sport for development and peace and recently spoke at the United Nations Youth Assembly on their behalf. She is currently between NYC and Western Massachusetts where she is developing her fine art collection. She is represented by Agora Fine Art Gallery in Chelsea, New York City who say this about her work: ""Vanessa Chakour’s kinetic drawings are about freedom: freedom to think, freedom to feel, freedom to remember, freedom to meditate, freedom to explore and freedom to move forward. The colors in her paintings move in and out of each other, echoing the way psychedelic rock swells, crescendos and explodes into a sea of sounds. Text, historical figures, cityscapes, and abstracted shapes all openly interact in Chakour’s work. Her images function as politically, culturally aware streams of consciousness, at once reacting to the injustices of recent history and the lively kinesthesia of daily life." |
