Artist Statement for Da Costa Villar
Has a special atraction for the baroque light, contrast and darkness - conflict, inquietude, torment. His masters: Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Turner, Medardo Rosso.
Part of his work is a reinterpretation of impressive images of our times addressed by the media - and many times made common place by the latter or simply forgotten in routine. See, for example, his painting called "No More", based on a newspaper photography about Sarajevo during war. Even strange references to the World Trade Center terrorist attack is present here, in special in his paintings "Meeting" and "What Wonderful World".
There is an expressionist character in his style, in which emotion - the inner side - has a greater importance than being faithful to reality of the external world. Nevertheless, his tendence is less abstract than figurative.
