Artist Statement for Vanessa Smith

People of the ancient past wove intricate stories about heroes, heroines, strange creatures, gods, and goddesses to explain the powerful and mysterious forces of nature present in the world around them and to explain where humankind’s place was in the midst of it all.
I have always been fascinated with stories, contemporary or ancient, humorous, tragic, frightening, or moralistic. When I was a small child, I loved listening to people telling ghost stories or reading books of science fiction, fantasy, or adventure. I would make up my own stories to explain the world around me when I did not know the “proper” or scientific names or explanations of the how and why. In my work as an artist, I use my love of narrative to gain a deeper understanding of myself, by developing my own visual mythology.
When I began with my personal work, I incorporated known ancient myths and characters of the past to explore my ideals and identity as an emerging artist. As I continued to work, I began to move away from established mythologies and wanted to create my own intriguing narratives with a more personal visual mythology.
In my current body of work, I have recently moved in a slightly different direction. Instead of completely relying on stories and myths of the past, I have begun to create my own narrative images inspired by science fiction, fantasy, and horror movies, as well as my own imagination and dreams. With these images, I wish to create moods and suggest narratives to cause the viewers to use their own imaginations, to generate their own stories, and find their own meanings within my work.
