Artist Statement:
English painter with the english landscape tradition, Turner, the Camden School and the influence of Rothko in his wake, Wayne Sleeth is installed since 2001 in France with a cross-channel reputation for his work.
His approach is coloured by the open spaces and horizontality particular to both sides of 'La Manche', of maternal Flanders and paternal Lincolnshire. In the artist's own words, these works are 'scapes', neither particularly landscapes not seascapes, nor marines, but anagrams of 'spaces'. There is almost a formal dimension to Sleeth's dealings with what he calls 'synaesthetics of place', particularly in his predilection for square formats, but only the titles (ocassionally) create allusions to a specific location.

| Your Personal Biography |
" These are neither (land)scapes nor (sea)scapes, but ‘scapes’; anagrams of certain ‘spaces’."
In his mature work since moving to the Lorraine region of France in 2001, Wayne Sleeth reiterates and re-explores the source and schema of his more formative sensations; the big skies above the flat lands of both the Lincolnshire coast of his father and the polders of maternal Flanders, where he also spent his childhood. The Lorraine region for this confirmed European is not only geographically strategic, but offers an echo of that very play of horizontality and verticality where the artist draws freely on “l’espace” as he knows and feels it, as far as the canvas edge…
"They are neither about land nor sea nor skies, but those spaces colour, line and texture inhabit, make their own, or escape. "
