Artist Statement:
My media include drawing, painting and collage. My subjects includes landscapes, streetscapes, portraits and still lifes. I often work from direct observation en plein air. For other projects I work more from imagination or photo references.
As a drawing instructor, I have tried to become conversant in a wide range of techniques. These include metalpoint, charcoal graphite, ink and natural red chalk.
My themes include African history and culture. I have travelled to the Caribbean and West Africa, drawing and painting en plein air. I completed my MFA with a historical painting and lithography project "African-led Slave Rebellions in the United States, Haiti and Jamaica."

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
Neal Adams, Leonardo da Vinci and Romare Bearden are probably the top three. I have emulated their styles and done pastiches of their drawings and paintings.
I also admire Kathe Kollwitz, Lucien Freud and John Wilde. Keith Herchenroether, Paul Kuhrman and Herb Olds are Pittsburgh artists who influenced me since high school.
Art that I collect include Yoruba women's textiles--Adire cloth, and traditional Japanese sake cups. |

| Your Personal Biography |
I am originally from Pittsburgh, PA where my parents and older siblings encouraged my interests in art, literature and athletics. I gradually got more and more serious studying art in high school and greatly improved my skills and portfolio in Carnegie-Mellon University's Pre-College Art Program.
Cooper Union was my undergraduate school where I received my BFA in 1989. My instructors included innovative ceramic artist James Makins (in a Parsons exchange program) who was an NEA Fellow in 1976 and 1980. I also studied with, and later assisted sculptor Nancy Grossman in her studio. Her many awards include an NEA Fellowship in 1984. She was my instructor in drawing.
After working as a picture framer with Bark Frameworks for 2 years, I left NYC prepare for graduate school. I received my MFA from the University of Mississippi in 1989. Professor Jere Allen guided my historical painting and lithography thesis on 'African-led Slave Rebellions in the United States, Jamaica and Haiti.'
In 2000 and 2001, I made trips to West Africa, visiting historical and cultural sites. The research helped me earn three Puffin Foundation Grants.
Currently, I am researching silverpoint and other traditional drawing materials. In 2009, I was awarded a Pollack Krasner Foundation Grant to furhter my study and experimentation with tradtional materials.
I teach Basic and Intermediate Drawing at the Pasco Arts Center and Dunedin Fine Arts Center in Florida. |
