Artist Statement:
Without light there can be no colour. Everything is defined by colour and into her paintings Wiebke Dreyer pours her passion for colour and light.
Growing up in northern Europe as a very visual person, Wiebke was always powerfully aware of light and its absence during the short dark winter days.
Moving to Barcelona in 1994 she was first overwhelmed by the brightness of Mediterranean light and was surprised that her fellow students seemed indifferent to the intensity of light and colour. In that bright light colours have to be intense, strong to be noticed; so unlike the pastel shades used by the artists of northern climes. It was this difference that inspired Wiebke to start exploring colour through painting and she took initial inspiration from Mediterranean landscapes and architecture, moving slowly towards abstraction.
Influencing her some kind or another during this way were The Blue Rider artists, Paul Klee, Frida Kahlo, Joan Miró, Gerhard Richter and Miquel Barceló, and writers portraying their colourful Latin American culture, such as Isabel Allende and Gabriel García Marquéz
During her MA Wiebke started her first series “Colour and Words” , exploring how language and colour relate to each other and how our ...

| Your Personal Biography |
I was born in 1973 in Hamburg and spent my childhood in a village south of Hamburg, at the edge of a big forest. This resulted in my need for nature alongside the pleasues of living in a big and cultural city, I truely need both and substitute my village forest with walks in Hampstead Heath, close to my home in north London.
The second great influence were the years I spent studying in Barcelona at The Escola Massaana and south France at the Ecole des beaux-arts de Montpellier, where the strong mediterranean light and colours had a profound impact on a northern person.
I have travelled extensively since my teenage years, which left me speaking English, Spanish and French beside German, and with a passion for linguistics, which became part of my MA thesis at Wimbledon College of Art.
I also use sport as an inspiration, last year I passed my second Dan in Taekwondo and did a series of paintings after the forms I had to do for the grading. I recently took up fencing, too.
Beside being a very visiual person, expressing myself in images I love the written word and no book is safe, I read at least two per week.
After reading, music played a big part during my growing up, starting with early musical education at the age of five and resulting in playing piano, recorder, flute, and a bit of guitar and drums. I live with a jazz musician and also just took up the flute again. Music still plays a big part in my life as a source of energy and inspiration in my studio, in concerts and the opera. |
