Artist Statement:
I believe the strength of my paintings lies in their careful balance of realism and abstraction and the unique synthesis of form and color. My deep connection to nature is evident; many objects appear organic and even the Abstracts have a sense of movement. My intricate layering of objective and ...

Ursula Rettich – “Scapes of Land, Sea & Sky”
The bright vibrant paintings of Ursula Rettich’s latest exhibit, “Scapes of Land, Sea & Sky” are presented in such a way that you immediately want to step closer; to go deeper into the paintings and examine the vibrancy of the land, the sea and sky that she renders in oils and acrylics.
The artist documents outdoor scenes and vistas all year long with her camera, and in her memory, traveling around the Kootenays as well as further a field. Many of her previous works come from memories of her childhood in the islands of the North Sea in northern Germany where she grew up.
Rettich finds that she works best in solitude, in her studio in Fletcher Falls. Once the time has been invested creating the image in her mind, she works quickly with each picture, simplifying the shapes and colours, to bring out the essence of that which she wishes to represent.
Abbotsford artists sweep provincial Arts and Culture Contest
In a surprising turn of events, the winners of the provincial Arts and Culture Week Poster Contest all live in Abbotsford. The contest, which put out a call for submissions to schools and community councils, attracted over 300 submissions. Contestants were invited to express what the arts meant to them with a view to celebrating the 10th anniversary of this provincial celebration of the arts.
The winner of the Adult category, and the overall winner, is Ursula E. Rettich.
