| Your Personal Biography |
A native of Seoul, South Korea, Young Tae Lee grew up in streets running with filthy water. Movies cost seven cents, and ice cream was half a cent, but he couldn't afford either. It was a lovely childhood on which to base 'When I was your age” stories.
He graduated from Inha University in 1997 with a BA in Architectural Engineering and worked at the Halla Engineering and Construction Corporation for two years before quitting and moving to Kangnung, a small city on the east coast of Korea to pursue art. His parents were not happy.
In Kangnung, one house burned down in a mountain fire, and another was washed away when a dam broke due to an unruly typhoon. Between catastrophes he attended Gwandong University, eventually graduating with a MFA in 2007. Check out his thesis exhibition.
Young Tae recently relocated to the United States under pressure from his American wife and currently resides in Granville, Ohio.
Once, a few years ago when they were studying English together, Young Tae asked his then fiancée what color her then roommate was. It seemed like a strange question because the roommate was also Korean, but he explained that sometimes he could see colors around people. What did it mean? Auras? He said he had started to see them when he began to study art. He can’t see them now, though, perhaps due to all of the stress associated with graduating, earning money, and trying to support a family. His wife is a little sorry: when they first began dating, he was happily poor, doing service in a Catholic-run program for the elderly and earning a little money here and there to pay for his art. He thought people should live in simple poverty like Mother Theresa. He was a pure soul, and he never got angry. He could see colors. Now that he is married to his beautiful but nagging wife and has a beautiful but hungry baby, life is no longer so simple, and the colors are no longer visible. Life now is the coming down from the mountain you do when you decide you REALLY want to be a holy man.
And if you ever grow to be holy, it should make for good pictures.
