Artist Statement:
In my paintings there is a story happening on the surface, but everything is not spelt out. I believe it is important to allow room for the imagination and interpretation of the viewer, and indeed the artist. I'm an admirer of the Surrealist philosophy of seeking to let thoughts and responses occur at the intuitive or subconscious level, and I believe in allowing opportunities for this in the creation of art.
Painting for me is on one level a technical and aesthetic challenge; an exploration of form, composition, colour and textures. But it is also a tradition with limitless potential for expressing moods and feelings, creating original narratives, and reflecting on the concerns of the artist. Recently, I've been working from images that interest me on a visual and topical level (recent paintings include imagery from Japanese "kawaii" (cute) and pop culture, prisoners, hospitals, and Chernobyl), which I use and sometimes combine to create new stories and atmospheres. Where the source material comes from is not necessarily important to the final work or the intended meaning, but can help inspire in the making of it.

| Your Personal Biography |
I completed a BA Fine Art (Hons) degree at Middlesex University in 1996. My work during the degree was a mixture of painting and film. After my degree I travelled, living in Sydney for six months and Los Angeles for four years, where I worked in film post production picture and sound editing departments.
Since returning to London in 2002, I have worked as a web and graphic designer, but also spent six months painting at the Cyprus College of Art. I am currently producing new work from my studio in East London. My intentions are to exhibit my work and continue pursuing art as a career focus.
---------------
I was born (1974) and raised in London. I’ve been interested in painting and drawing since childhood, and grew up in an environment where artistic activities were encouraged. My father and two uncles were professional photographers and my grandfather was Waldo Peirce, a well known American painter whose work has featured in museums and collections such as the Metropolitan’s in New York. I grew up with paintings around and an early impression of art as a profession. |
