Artwork Description:
Contemporary redwood sculpture with a bold spiraling design consisting of two crescent forms joined at the ends to create a raised corkscrew configuration. The simplistic crescent wood forms are heavily curved with gradually tapered ends and distinct soft grooves on the outer edges which accentuate the design. As the sculptured wood forms gracefully curve around and upward, they are also slightly tilted which provides added visual intrigue to the spiral. Originally conceived as a prototype design for a potential race trophy award. The wood composition has been mounted on a square redwood pedestal and is raised with beveled edges.
This dynamic abstract redwood sculpture has been created with redwood burls that have been sculptured with chain saws, shaped with grinders and carefully hand crafted to further enhance the natural forms. After final sanding and other preparations, the wood components are permanently assembled with steel rods. The redwood components have been sprayed with several applications of durable semi gloss clear lacquer and hand rubbed, producing a lustrous finish that reveals all the natural wood colors and exotic grain patterns. Due to the nature of redwood burls, each sculpture is one of a kind and cannot be duplicated. Although it is possible to create similar designs, each one is unique. All of the natural redwood used to create these sculptures has been reclaimed from the underground portions of fallen trees which have been victimized from winter storms, landslides or forest fires, therefor no living trees have been utilized.
