Artwork Description:
Abstract redwood sculpture composition that simulates an energetic standing figure with a profound stance and making bold, defiant gestures. From this particular view point, the figure appears to have a predominant angular head form with an arm like appendage thrusting dramatically up and forward while the other arm moves in an opposite direction. As the sculpture is viewed from other positions, it becomes visually monolithic with dynamic architectural wood forms that appear to be in motion as they expand from the central base structure.
This striking redwood sculpture has been composed with several redwood burls that have been carved with chain saws, shaped with grinders and hand crafted to further enhance the natural forms. After thorough sanding, the wood designs are assembled with multiple steel rods and sprayed with a durable clear oil, revealing all the natural wood colors and exotic grain patterns. The smooth, polished surface areas are later treated with a clear satin polyurethane that is applied by hand to accentuate and embellish certain areas of the sculpture design.
Due to the nature of redwood burls, each sculpture is totally unique and cannot be duplicated. Although it is possible to create similar designs, they will never be exactly the same.
All of the natural redwood used to create these sculptures has been reclaimed from the underground portions of fallen trees which have been victimized from winter storms, landslides or forest fires, therefor no living trees have been utilized.
