Artwork Description:

Refraction is an exhibition that extends on my interest in light and its effects on the land and our surrounds and connects with my growing interest and research into culture, identity and belonging. In April 2013 I had the privilege of spending time with an amazing group of Indigenous people in the Northern Territory. Over the past five or so years my growing interest in the history of this land led me inevitably to meet and begin to build relationship with the traditional custodians. The snippet I have learned of their intimate relationship to land has engendered in me a strong sense of needing to explore my own ethnic and cultural background in more depth. These works are the outcome of this interaction. Refraction is part of the process by which I am exploring my relationship to this land - how do I fit here as an immigrant in light of the fact that this is the only place I have known as home (I was 18mths old when I arrived in Australia). Refraction is the bending of light through a lens, which produces interesting patterns of light and colour Refraction is the bending of light through my lens, my cultural and ethnic background. In the last 5-6 years I have focused on creating paintings that evoke a mood and atmosphere that hopefully draws the viewer's eye in - a quality I find strongly appealing and evident in the works of Rick Amor, Louise Hearman, Caspar David Friedrich, Edward Hopper and JMW Turner. Inspiration has come from the amazing displays of light and colour playing on landscapes surrounding where I work and live. In my exhibition entitled Light Chasing! (2008) I explored how light and it's effects can alter our perceptions of familiar places or objects and perhaps cause us to look deeper into what constitutes reality.
