Artwork Description:
The great path has no gates,
Thousands of roads enter it.
When one passes through this gateless gate
He walks freely between heaven and earth.
The painting Gateless Gate captures the essence of Zen which uses puzzles called Koan to enlighten the seeker. The top right side of the painting shows a hubless wheel while the left side shows a man engrossed in material pleasures(cherry),ignorant of his inevitable end. This may also be interpreted as the emphasis of eastern philosophy on living in the moment, unconcerned about the past or present. The right side represents the Tao teaching that one should flow with the nature of things.
