Artist Statement

LIFE IS NOT A STYLE

Symbol corresponds to the visual arts closer than Allegory, Metaphor, and Myth. A visual image in its nature rather is Symbol than Allegory or Metaphor, which are closer to literature. The visual arts are always implicated with Symbol more or less. Since 1989 my art is called Postsymbolism. It is not exactly in line with art, which is known from art history as Symbolism. Herein I am trying to represent my romantic vision of the modern real world, both abstractedly and figuratively. Symbolical ideas I use are not narrative wide, but they can touch us emotionally and mentally direct, as for instance ideas of happiness or sorrow, of light or darkness, etc.

The arts related to Symbol did not create either schools or styles. Moreover, the arts arisen from depth of Symbol have escaped of freezing, or some of them have stopped to be symbolical arts in case of formation into the certain styles. We may invent unlimited quantity of different names and styles, like Pop-art, Op-art, Flop-art, Slop-art, Stop-art, etc. And then some of my recent works could be qualified as “impressional abstract expressionism” or anyhow else, but they stay having a symbolical meaning.

The arts relating to symbol and art at all probably, as it seems could be in its definition, is similar to human because art cannot be used as a server or material for anything. It is also not peculiar to human to be a means. Human is always the purpose. The artist's personal hand and mind are always recognizable in each his/her work and it is not called a style. It is not correct to say: the Rembrandt-style, the Picasso-style; and it would be wrong to tell concerning any human: “He/she has lived and died in the style of…” Life is not a style.
