Literati painting also known as ink wash painting was invented in East Asia and the Chinese used black ink to perfection. History suggests that the Shan Shui style existed during the 5th century. It was then further developed during the Tang dynasty and Wang Wei is generally credited to taking this process further by applying color to ink paintings. During the Chinese Song Dynasty to the 13th century ink wash painting was further developed into a more polished style. Ink paint is usually used on Japanese washi paper or Chinese xuan paper. Both are very absorbent to the ink and thus a perfect material. Silk has also been used for some ink wash paintings. Mainly used in China, Korea and Japan this technique has also gained popularity in the Western World and many modern artists use this ancient technique for their artworks.

Kichung Lizee - After coming to this country from Korea in the mid 60's to study art, among the many forms of Western art that I was introduced to, Abstract Expressionism interested me most. Currently I am in the process of synthesizing Eastern and Western approaches to art. Specifically, I'm adopting the techniques and materials of Eastern calligraphy to Western thematic material, my primary goal being to close the gap between East and West and reach for universal creativity. Eastern calligraphy I learned is a living and breathing spirit, rather than the dead and rigid tradition of thousands of years. It is uniquely a form that conveys the pulsation of life energy. Through it, one can experience all aspects of the living spectrum. Eastern calligraphic form reveals the kind of life the artist has led, as well as foreshadowing the person one will become. It is the art form that manifests the self as a way of life or philosophy of life. It is a powerful art form that operates through direct intuition. As an artist I rely heavily on creative intuition. Moving with changes in the stream of consciousness, my creative intuition somehow brings out the subconscious and superconscious through ...

Candice Rongyu - Harris Gulko - Rather than giving technical details concerning my paintings, I take the liberty to convey, in fewer than 150 words, the philosophy of life that influences all my paintings. My artwork cuts across artistic barriers, displaying many themes landscapes, seascapes, cloud formations, abstracts, childhood games, religious compositions and more. If there is one constant in my work, it is my inconsistency When I am at my easel I try to create on canvas what I am seeing. But often I go off on a tangent, and what ends up often bears little resemblance to what I was attempting to paint. My formula for success consists of ambition, drive, hard work, effort, energy, fear of failure, patience, perspiration and persistence. Life and love are made of time. Privileged those who find love in time. Wise those who express love, before life runs out of time....

Michael Schaffer - Exploring the realms of color, texture, drama, and feelings are the main ingredients of my art work. To inspire the viewer to deal with the issues presented to him is my goal. To inspire the viewer to interpret and react is my passion. I hope you have been inspired... or at least have an opinion. Art and life have many of the same ingredients for us to enjoy....

Mario Ortiz Martinez - The main distinction of an artist is, or should be, insanity or, at least, the tendency to think and do absurd, showy, original and little comprehensible things for the common man. In particular, what attracts me the most is sharing my work, to the point of asking for very low prices. simple peanuts sometimes or flatly give it to those who appreciate it. Try me. This site requires a price standard. Very understandable and logical. But I would never refuse a reasonable offer. Just thinking about continuing, about having a penny to buy more colors and keep producing. Even when my works consist of a simple paper and in a small format, I always want to show my commitment to people, in order to brighten up a small corner of the house and invite reflection on the beautiful, the harmonious, the good vibes of the world. Some of these works have served as a study for large-format painting, but I have to honestly say that the study always looks better than the enlarged copy. In art, the first impulse, the first pictorial phrase, the first flash of inspiration, the first painted word that comes from the heart, is the ...

Grace Auyeung - Landscape painting is my artistic gravity, and I mainly use Chinese ink, colour and Xuan paper as media. I like to explore various techniques and styles, but I place strong emphasis on the use of lines to express my feelings and thoughts about the landscape I try to recreate. I see my art as a vision of my inner self and my spiritual self as well....

Jack Earley - After writing for two decades, I was developing an idea that I knew could be better expressed as a painting. So in the mid-eighties I took up full-time a life-time passion: painting. My work is about inner energy; about, first of all, my own energy and internal balance, reinforced through the practice of yoga and tai chi. I sign the inner energy of the subject matter onto the canvas. I work with acrylics on canvas and sumi-e inks on rice paper. I also sculpt using wood, copper and leather. Along with focusing on the inner energy of my subject matter, I am constantly working with an awareness that humans have an ancient need to see form, be it in clouds or in chipped paint on a wall or in waving leaves. The ability to decipher forms is part of our oldest survival skills. Imagine the advantage of being able to quickly spot the approaching bear among the shifting shadows of trees. Imagine the advantage and the thrill. On many canvases, I create forms so the viewer "discovers" them in an uplifting act. Often, I give the paint its head in creating forms, like freeing a captured ...

Rhoda Taylor - Every day I work in my studio and every day I look forward to creating artwork. Painting is my passion.... I wouldn't know what to do without it. The studio that I work in is situated on the grounds of our house in beautiful Southern Ireland, surrounding me are the mountains with their soft mists, the rolling hills and ancient coastline, it all fills me with happiness and inspiration, I can gaze from my window at the amazing views, the Atlantic ocean, fields, cattle, birds and trees, this truly is a mystical and magical place. Over the years I have worked with various mediums, glass painting, silk screen, oils, pen and ink, gouache and watercolour, but my ultimate choice is my pen and ink work which I truly adore, I know I can put into the paintings a tremendous amount of detail that would be almost impossible using another medium. I am fortunate to of had a lot of my work purchased and exhibited worldwide, England, Ireland, France, Germany, Malta, Hong Kong, Vienna, Japan, and America, with works including Portraiture, Design and Illustration, not to mention the countless private commission requests ranging from transforming memorable photographs into paintings for ...

Raul Canestro Caballero - Raul CaA+-estro Caballero was born in Ronda, one of the oldest and most historic Spanish cities, located in Andalusia a land where famous artists, writers and philosophers have found inspiration for their work. For many years he lived in Cantabria, a region in northern Spain whose wild mountains, sea and people influenced his personal quest for excellence and authenticity. During his youth, he made an adventurous trip to India that marked him deeply and fueled the process of self-reflection. The early artistic inquisitiveness developed by RAUL CANESTRO flourished in a family of artists and artisans painters, book illustrators, wood carvers and leather workers, but his paintings require more than innate talent they require hardwork, energy, effort, passion and above all, conviction. As a child, he enjoyed drawing and soon began to experiment with different textures and techniques such as oil, watercolor, ink, pyrography, colored pencil, as well as with different styles including cubism, realism, abstraction and surrealism. It was an ongoing effort to better himself and find new ways of expression twisting, destroying and re-building, creating new movements in Art that he calls A<< The Power of Form A>> in a constant search for improvement. Equilibrium, order and harmony...
